The Necessity of Mission Work

Saving lost souls is the responsibility of Christ’s church.  It is a responsibility given by our Lord Himself (Ephesians 3:10-11)In order for souls to be saved the gospel must be preached, and in order for there to be preaching, there must be a preacher (Romans 10:13-17).  Just before He returned to heaven, Jesus told his apostles to take the gospel to all people (Matthew 28:19-20; Mark 16:15-16; Luke 24:46-47).  Those who go and do this work need and deserve the support of those of us who cannot go.  Furnishing some of this support is the purpose of the Main Street mission program.

The elders at Main Street have guided this congregation to place a strong emphasis on mission work. Besides the support of full-time missionaries in several locations, we send our own members into the mission fields several times each year. The moral and financial support of the whole congregation gives the members going out to work a sense of purpose to convert the lost and a sense of obligation to the congregation to represent the church at Main Street in a positive manner.

The number one goal of missions is to seek and save those who are lost through the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ. There is also a secondary goal in our mission work. By sending our own members out to do some of this work, we see a great benefit to our own congregation. The personal growth and renewed dedication of the returning mission workers benefit the local congregation in ways that would be hard to accomplish any other way. The members who are unable to go into the mission field have a vested interest in the work because it is their friends who are being sent. This arrangement fosters a spirit of teamwork about our mission program and we give God the glory for any successes.

The Gospel is truly the "power of God unto salvation."

The Main Street Church of Christ is actively involved in spreading the good news of Jesus Christ at home and around the world.  Mission areas include Montreal, Hong Kong, South Africa, and the Ukraine.  In addition supporting missionaries around the world, members of the congregation have journeyed to the Ukraine and South Africa to personally carry the gospel.  Wherever we can have an influence, we try to show Christ’s love and to present a church that strives to follow in His faith and practice.

Missionaries

Missions Workshop

In February 1996, nine men - Jim Sherman, Chuck Damron, Howard Justice, Keith Blackburn, Bob McKinney, Denny Collins, Fred Peatross, Gene Clemons, and Thaniel Thacker - met in the basement of the Main Street church of Christ for the first Missions Workshop. Never in their wildest dreams did they think this small group of men would be the pioneers of such a wonderful endeavor for the Lord. Their meeting started at 9:30 am and ended at 12:00 noon with a spaghetti dinner prepared by Chuck Damron himself. During this meeting they discussed mission trips they had taken and mission trips of the future. The theme of this meeting was "Go Ye into all the World", and this is just what they have done!

Over the past 10 years, the Main Street Missions Workshops have grown bigger and better than they ever imagined, with numbers reaching in the 300range for a weekend attendance. People have come from all over the world to participate in the planning and organizing of spreading God's Word. As the years seem to go swiftly by, more and more people want to be a part of this wonderful event- not only to find out what is happening in other parts of the world, but to be a part of the fellowship. Many brothers and sisters in Christ come to Pikeville each year just to visit one another, sharing their love for each other.

Again, they never dreamed that from that one little meeting, so many would one day be a part of their dream ...

The Missions Workshop is held annually in February.
